What we do to make a difference.
- All compostable food scraps are turned into liquid fertilizer and compost. This has lowered garbage costs by an amazing 35% and reduced collection by the same.
- Switching from battery powered floor cleaners with disposable cleaning fluid bottles and pads to a non battery operated system with refillable bottles and washable pads.
- High concentrated laundry detergent. 1 table spoon for most loads of laundry (not heavily soiled).
- Mulching grass clipping has reduced fertilizer costs and has reduced the amount of watering required. Cutting grass longer has also resulted in water savings.
- Pesticide and weed control chemicals free since 2008
- Rinsing dirty dishes in old dish water has reduced the amount of detergent required to achieve the same result of cleanliness.
- Substituting sand for salt on walk ways and ramps during the winter months has resulted in our salt consumption reduction by 50%.
- "Tag teaming" snow removal from high risk areas, more frequently, has made a huge difference in salt usage. Staff is appreciating the extra workout during winter months.
- Switching to bio-degradable garbage bags in rooms
- Almost total ban on disposable cups.
- First purchase commitment - supporting the local farmers market by buying as much organic, local produce as possible. Supporting a demand and supple requirement for local farmers.
- All purchasing is plastic bag free.
- All landscaping upgrades involve reducing grassed areas and increasing native options.
- All bottle recycling monies are put towards our staff appreciation fund, which supports those working on this process.
- Recycling volume to garbage volume is 6/7 to 1.
- The phasing out of harmful chemicals to green products is almost complete.
- Suggest guests reuse towels in their guest rooms.
- Encourage our Wedding Guests to plant a tree to remember.
What can you do to make a difference?
10 things to do to help save the planet
- Plant a tree.
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime
- Change a light bulb.
Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
- Walk, bike, carpool or take the transit.
You’ll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don’t drive!
- Recycle.
You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.
- Check your tires.
Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
- Use less hot water.
It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by installing a low-flow showerhead (350 pounds of CO2 per year), and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds of CO2 per year)
.
- Avoid products with a lot of packaging.
You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.
- Adjust your thermostat.
Moving your thermostat just 2 degrees in winter and 2 degrees in summer could save 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
- Turn off electronic devices.
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you’re not using them will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
